Contact Sports in OBPI
This subject tends to be an emotionally charged issue as most parents work very hard to normalize their child’s experiences. There is a new statement issued by the Canadian Pediatric Society and the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine concerning the use of trampolines in homes and playgrounds. This was issued in response to the growing number of children and youth sustaining injury during recreational use. I am asked almost weekly for my opinion of contact/active sport for children with OBPI. The joint statement reflects my view that if a sport or recreational activity is dangerous for able bodied children, caution is a wise course for the child with OBPI.
The statement was published in the July/August edition of Paediatrics & Child Health, and is available online at: www.cps.ca Printable document to distribute to parents is available at: www.caringforkids.cps.ca
